I have experience of working with a range of neurological conditions including those that arise from injury to the brain or spinal cord including Stroke and Spinal Cord Injury as well as disease pathologies that affect the central or peripheral nervous system such as Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone Disease and Guillan Barre Syndrome.
A neurological physiotherapists approach to rehabilitation is founded on an understanding of neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is the ability of our nervous system to change and adapt through our environment and experiences. Drawing on theoretical knowledge and through expert observation and analysis a neurological physiotherapist utilises specialist facilitation techniques, specific exercises and other adjuncts to optimise the re-learning and re-establishment of movement patterns following neurological injury. There is evidence to support physiotherapy both in the acute stages of a neurological event as well as for people with long-term conditions.
